Journey

Introduction

If you ask Google the question, “how to photograph a journey?”, it responds with 349 million answers in under half a second. So then, how is it possible to photograph one? The dictionary entry for journey states:

journey |ˈdʒəːni| noun ( pl. journeys ) an act of travelling from one place to another: an eight-hour train journey. • a long and often difficult process of personal change and development: her spiritual journey towards Roman Catholicism | I was excited with my character’s journey in the film. A life cycle could also be considered a journey as could almost any process that contains steps to move from one state to another.

My approach to this

As noted above a journey can mean many different things therefore I have decided to use a series of unrelated images. Each image clearly gets the message across.

Critical Analysis

1. The old and the new

This interesting panorama shows contrasting methods of transport.

Technical

The focus is sharp and the image is correctly exposed. The depth of field is perfectly adequate for this image The shutter speed used was just fast enough to ensure a sharp image.

Compositional

The composition uses the rule of thirds well to create a striking image.

Lighting

Natural light has been used unmodified.

Post Processing

Adobe Lightroom was used to make basic adjustments along with adding an appropriate lens correction and removing chromatic aberration. The image was enhanced by adding sharpening, noise reduction and clarity as required.

How To Improve

I can honestly say that it would be hard to improve much on this image.

General Comments

Overall I find the image very pleasing, it’s technically sound and well processed.

2. Paddlers rest

The two canoes lie side by side. This is more powerful without the canoeists.

Technical

The focus is selective and the image is slightly under exposed. The depth of field is used to draw attention to the subject. The shutter speed used was just fast enough to ensure a sharp image.

Compositional

The composition uses the rule of thirds well to create a balanced image.

This is a striking, dynamic image that has been well executed. The lighting works really well as does the composition.

3. Remembering the past, contemplating the future.

A friend contemplates some life changing events.

Technical

The focus is just acceptable and the image is correctly exposed. The depth of field is very wide to capture as much detail as possible and is achieved by using a small aperture. The shutter speed used was just fast enough to ensure a sharp image.

Compositional

The composition uses the rule of thirds well to create a compelling image.

Lighting

Natural light has been used unmodified.

Post Processing

Adobe Lightroom was used to make basic adjustments along with adding an appropriate lens correction and removing chromatic aberration. A black and white conversion was performed using Silver Efex Pro 2

How To Improve

This works well the way it is but a different aspect ratio might be better. Maybe even 1:1.

General Comments

This is a striking, dynamic image that has been well executed. The lighting works really well as does the composition.

4. Vroom.

Taken from the back seat of a speeding car. Motion blur!

Technical

The focus is slightly blurred and the image is slightly under exposed. The depth of field is used to draw attention to the subject. The shutter speed used was slow enough to show motion blur as I intended.

Compositional

The composition uses colour well to create a great image.

Lighting

Natural light has been used unmodified.

Post Processing

Adobe Lightroom was used to make basic adjustments along with adding an appropriate lens correction and removing chromatic aberration. The image was enhanced by adding sharpening, noise reduction and clarity as required.

How To Improve

I think a slightly different crop could be used to change the dynamics of the image but it’s a close call.

General Comments

Overall I find the image very pleasing, it’s technically sound and well processed.

5. Soon comes the angels share.

Arran whiskey distillery. The pure spirit passes through the “Spirit safe”.

Technical

The focus is just acceptable and the image is correctly exposed. The depth of field is very wide to capture as much detail as possible and is achieved by using a small aperture. The shutter speed used was slow enough to show motion blur as I panned the camera.

Compositional

The composition uses leading lines well to create a balanced image.

Lighting

Natural light has been used unmodified.

Post Processing

Adobe Lightroom was used to make basic adjustments along with adding an appropriate lens correction and removing chromatic aberration. A black and white conversion was performed using Silver Efex Pro 2

How To Improve

It would be better if the subject was closer or the lens was zoomed in a bit.

General Comments

I felt as though the whole shoot was rushed. I wish we had more time.

6. One step after another.

Lao-Tzu said that a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

Technical

The focus is sharp and the image is slightly under exposed. The depth of field is very wide to capture as much detail as possible and is achieved by using a small aperture. The shutter speed used was just fast enough to ensure a sharp image.

Compositional

The composition uses leading lines well to create a beautiful image.
